Rach Kirsten has a background in the domains of visual arts education and dance education, and has lectured with UNSW Arts and Social Sciences since 2009.

Alongside her work at UNSW Rach has held senior positions in the NSW Department of Education, currently as the Department's Senior Evaluation Advisor and previously as the Creative Arts Advisor for Secondary Education and the Curriculum Manager for Science, Technology and The Arts. In these statewide roles, Rach led the implementation of curriculum in NSW public schools, particularly in the domains of visual arts, music, drama and dance, and convened statewide conferences and professional learning opportunities for teachers.

Rach's knowledge and experience in art education have informed directions for curriculum renewal in state and national contexts over many years and she continues to be an advocate for art education through her work with schools, curriculum authorities, arts organisations and professional associations. Rach was the NSW representative on the National Panel for The Arts, providing strategic advice for NSW and contributing to the national panel during each stage of the development of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts, successfully advocating for a non-reductive approach to adopting the curriculum in NSW. She has led the writing of large-scale international art projects where she developed the visual arts curriculum now implemented across the United Arab Emirates. Rach is the Editor of artVoices: Occasional Papers in Visual Arts Education NSW, and has authored and co-authored publications in partnership with organisations such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Kaldor Public Art Projects and consulted on publications and initiatives of the Biennale of Sydney.

Rach has worked as an academic lecturer in many areas of arts education at the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, Macquarie University, the University of Western Sydney, the Australian Catholic University and the Australian College of Physical Education; and as a Visual Arts teacher and Dance teacher at schools throughout NSW and interstate. Rach maintains her practice as a Visual Arts teacher with the NSW Department of Education.
