Teaching
Denis Mootz taught in small rural primary schools before transferring in 1972 to teach History and English. Denis spent nearly 20 years teaching in rural NSW before a stint overseas. Since 1988 Denis has taught in Metropolitan secondary schools.
Since 1977 Denis has held positions as a Head Teacher of English, History and Welfare.
Denis has been a member of the executive of the History Teachers’ Association of NSW since 1989. He has edited the journal Teaching History since 1994. Denis has been a board member and director of the History Teachers’ Association of Australia
since 1998.
Denis has served on Board of Studies Curriculum Committees and HSC Examination Committees. He has chaired BOS Committees for History and Aboriginal Studies, he has sat on committees for NSW Premier’s History Awards and History Scholarships, he
continues his commitment to rural education by traveling each year to remote NSW centres to deliver HSC student lectures.
Denis has published and contributed to publications on Ancient History, Modern History, Australian History, Aboriginal Studies, Aboriginal Literacy, Heritage, Museums and History Pedagogy.
Most recently Denis has pursued a personal interest in archaeology. He managed recently to combine this with an expanding interest in the Holocaust by presenting at an international conference at Yad Vashem on “Archaeology and the Holocaust”.
