The combined degree of Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Education is a four-year program for intending secondary school teachers in mathematics or science. Students combine studies in their approved teaching discipline with both theoretical and practical aspects of education. In the final two years of the program, students develop skills in classroom competence and spend 60 days on supervised teaching practice in allocated secondary schools.

Mathematics Major

Program Structure: Mathematics Major

The BSc/BEd is normally studied over four years, and requires a minimum of 192 units of credit (UOC) in approved courses including:

1. A minimum of 60UOC in mathematics
2. A minimum of 84UOC in courses offered by the Faculty of Science (incl. the mathematics courses)
3. A maximum of 60 UOC in Level 1 courses
4. A minimum of 90 UOC in Education, (indicated by prefi x EDST), including compulsory named courses

Program Structure: Science major
The BSc/BEd is normally studied over four years, and requires a minimum of 192 units of credit (UOC) in approved courses including:
1. A major in a Science related to either biology, chemistry, earth and environmental science, or physics
2. At least 12 UOC in Physics or Chemistry
3. At least one course from each of the four science disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Physics)
4. Minimum of 84 UOC in courses offered by the Faculty of Science
5. A maximum of 60 UOC in Level 1 courses
6. 90 units of credit in Education (indicated by prefix EDST), including compulsory named courses.

There are numerous Science majors with many different combinations of program plans. Students should seek further advice from the Faculty of Science or the BSc/BEd Coordinator for their plan.

English language proficiency requirements:
Proficiency in English is essential in all Education courses. Prospective teachers must be able to communicate effectively with school students and staff members.
It is expected that all applicants will have one of:
> Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Standard English OR
> Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in English as a Second Language OR
> Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Advanced English OR
> IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing
